2026 adidas Manchester Marathon winners’ comments

“It was a really incredible race from start to finish. I wanted to execute my plan which was staying in the group until at least 35k and then at 35k I did a little check, I realised that I was not feeling so bad, and that we were on course with the first, to do a really good time so I just waited I think until 38k to attack and then I just went for it the last 3k and I realised that I made a little gap between me and the second one and I just went for it at the last 3k, thinking about my family, my sister, my coach, and then my grandmother who unfortunately left us a few weeks ago and then I made it.”
“An incredible public in the UK, especially at the finish line. It was… I couldn’t hear myself it was just incredible and running a 4-minute PB and I just can’t believe it. It’s unbelievable. My first winning in such a big race, I’m just so grateful for today and everyone who cheers, who made this race possible, my family, my sister who is right there with me supporting me on every race, it’s been incredible, so I’m really happy with it.”
Naomi Robinson
“I always love running in Manchester. I've got my PB here, probably my hardest one yet. I had a tough day but probably the biggest crowd of all the ones I've done. It’s getting bigger and bigger and I loved it.”
Naomi Robinson (formerly known as Naomi Mitchell) came 2nd in 2022, won in 2023, and became a two-time champion in 2026, her third appearance at the race.

(In 2025, the second mat was used as the official finish line, and the first mat served as the backup.)

The first mat is where the result is taken. The second mat is for a backup.

During the British Athletics Cross Challenge in Liverpool, I had a chance to speak to FR systems, the official chip timing company for the Liverpool event.
I asked how they measure and record the time and where exactly the data will be taken on the mats. For instance, whether it will be on the edge of the first mat, the middle of the first mat or between the two mats.
The FR systems explained that the time will be taken when the chip crosses the middle of the first mat where the tape was put on.

FR systems chip timing mat and finish line

The second mat is for their backup in case the first mat is failed.
This is not an official statement from FR systems or a documented rule but a simple question about the chip timing method for my interest as a photographer.
In the British Athletics Cross Challenge series, the athletes are awarded on the points scored.

Additionally, I have asked if the case that the FR systems attends any other events (not applicable for the British Athletics Cross Challenge) for instance road races, the FR systems explained that the same principle will [most likely] be applied. If it's for a wheelchair event, the time will be measured from where the chip is placed.
